About us.

San Joaquin Valley Council for the Social Studies(SJVCSS) is a non-profit professional organization for teachers and administrators in the area of history-social science.  The Council, a local affiliate of the state and national organizations, California Council for the Social Studies (CCSS) and National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) advocates keeping history from becoming history.  CCSS supports a legislative analyst to stay abreast of current legislative issues that directly concern the classroom history teacher.

As a local Council, we have a Board of Directors which meets regularly to plan events, and guide the activities of the organization.  There are local and state opportunities for leadership on various committees:  curriculum, government, and publication to name just a few.  We sponsor student events like County History Day Competitions.  We also co-sponsor professional development for history-social studies teachers in the southern San Joaquin Valley.  Finally, we accept nominations for awards for the San Joaquin Valley Student, Elementary, Middle, and Secondary Social Studies Teachers of the Year, Administrator of the Year, and Professor of the Year. NEW in 2016 is the Marvin Awbrey School Team Award, named in honor of one of the founding members of SJVCSS who passed in February, 2016.
